Virgin Casino, which has been operating online in New Jersey for over 10 years, rebranded itself Wednesday as Monopoly Casino.
As of this writing at 10:30 a.m. ET, the site was undergoing maintenance, but users were told to “get ready to pass Go!” as the rebrand and relaunch was slated to happen “soon.”
Both brands, owned by Gamesys, have operated overseas for years.
There was no reason given to New Jersey Virgin online casino users as to why the rebranding was happening.
Past Virgin Casino users will be able to login using their Virgin usernames and passwords, and all account details will be seamlessly transferred. Users will have to download the Monopoly Casino app, however.
The actual backend of the app will remain mostly the same, though users will find some new features in addition to the normal supply of online casino titles, such as: Monopoly slot titles; Monopoly rewards, where players can turn Monopoly money into real cash; a Monopoly VIP program; and “free parking picks,” where people can play a free daily game to win free spins every day.
One potentially interesting wrinkle: In 2019, the Advertising Standards Authority in the U.K. told Gamesys that the company could not use the “Rich Uncle Pennybags” Monopoly mascot in promoting the casino (or any Monopoly-themed games) due to the potential of the character appealing to children.
And on the U.K. Monopoly Casino site, there is nary a mention of the rich uncle.
One of the first
Launched on Jan. 24, 2014, Virgin Casino was one of New Jersey’s first legal online casinos. The particular form of gambling was legalized in the state on Feb. 26, 2013, with regulations adopted by the Division of Gaming Enforcement that October.
“We’ve been rehearsing this moment for several years in the U.K., including dealing with players who have bet more than $4.3 billion on Gamesys games in 2013,” said Gamesys’ then-COO Lee Fenton at the time of launch. “VirginCasino.com has the most sought-after products, the most outrageous promotions, and a completely fun, safe online gambling experience designed especially for our new friends in New Jersey.”
When it first launched, Virgin Casino highlighted the now-quaint fact that it offered “more than 30 uniquely designed casino games such as blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and amazing slots like Secrets of the Phoenix.”
“We hope to provide New Jersey players with a globally leading, safe, fun, and rewarding online gambling experience,” said Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, at the time.
