Pennsylvania’s online casino industry continues to experience explosive growth in a year-over-year sense, even if April couldn’t quite match the record-breaking March revenue of $233 million. The latest data from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board shows an iGaming revenue total of $173.4 million for the month up more than 26% over April 2023.
Powered by those online increases, the total market continues to see improvements. Pennsylvania recorded total gaming revenue of $504,683,409 for April, a boost of 5.9% against the results from a year ago.
Breaking down the numbers, online slots were the true stars, with revenue reaching $126 million in April, a 31.8% YoY increase. Online table games also saw growth, generating $45 million, up 15.8% from April 2023. However, online poker revenue — $2.4 million — declined slightly, dipping 11.2% compared to the previous year.
This trend of online ascent is further highlighted by the middling performance of traditional land-based casinos. Revenue from retail slots and tables combined dropped over 10% YoY, indicating a continuing shift in consumer preference toward the convenience and variety offered by online platforms.
Ten of the 17 retail casinos in the state saw drops in revenue in April compared to a year ago. The biggest loser was Rivers Casino Pittsburgh, which recorded $6,154,381 for a 28.2% YoY fall.
The Casino at Nemacolin, which dropped Churchill Downs as its gaming partner last June, saw a huge improvement. Its table gaming revenue was $263,030, a 306.1% jump, and its slot revenue was $1,875,402, 19.1% higher than last year.
Sports betting scores
The positive news extends to Pennsylvania’s sports wagering industry. Total handle, encompassing both retail and online bets, reached $646 million in April, a 12.9% year-on-year increase. Taxable revenue from sports wagering also grew by 14.5%.
The period following the Super Bowl and March Madness until the start of the NFL season in the fall is typically a slower time for sportsbooks. The increases reported for April demonstrate that interest in other sports is solid, and greater gains are likely now that the NFL has released the team schedules.
Valley Forge Casino Resort, which is partnered with FanDuel, emerged as the top performer in sports betting among all licensees, generating $272.3 million in handle.
Breaking down the iGaming numbers
A closer look at the numbers shows which casinos are shining the brightest with their online operations. Notable, the online poker revenue remains modest as Pennsylvania continues to be left out the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement.
