Nassau County Says Yes To Las Vegas Sands Coliseum Proposal
LVS has ambitious plans for the coliseum and its surrounding area, known as the Nassau Hub

Nassau County lawmakers have officially approved the transfer of the Nassau Coliseum’s lease to Las Vegas Sands (LVS), marking a significant step toward the redevelopment of the historic venue and its surrounding area.
The decision was reached with a nearly unanimous vote on Monday, where 18 lawmakers voted in favor and only one opposed the 42-year agreement. This move comes alongside a unanimous vote to initiate a state environmental review of the coliseum and the adjacent property.
The Nassau Coliseum has a storied history, having served as a premier venue for sports, concerts, and other events since its opening in 1972. Most notably, it was the home of the New York Islanders from 1972 until 2015 and again briefly from 2018 to 2021. During the early 1980s, the Islanders captured four consecutive Stanley Cup championships, solidifying the coliseum’s place in sports history.
LVS has ambitious plans for the coliseum and its surrounding area, known as the Nassau Hub. The company has announced its intention to invest $4 billion to transform the site into a world-class casino and resort, should it be able to move forward with both.
This proposed development includes a state-of-the-art casino and luxury hotel accommodations. It also proposes entertainment venues, dining establishments, and other amenities aimed at boosting tourism and economic activity in the region.
LVS casino not a sure thing
Despite these grand plans, the full realization of the casino and resort hinges on LVS obtaining a gaming license from the state of New York. The approval process for such licenses has been chaotic and competitive, and the earliest a decision could be expected is sometime next year. In the event that the gaming license is not granted, LVS has assured stakeholders that it will still move forward with plans for a resort, albeit without the casino component.
According to LVS, the coliseum will continue to function as it has in the past. The company has repeatedly stated that the property will host a variety of events and serve as a centerpiece of the new development.
Proponents of the LVS project argue that the casino and resort could serve as a catalyst for economic growth. They argue that it will create new jobs, boosting local businesses and generating significant tax revenues for the county.
However, not everyone is in favor of the planned redevelopment. Hofstra University, located near the coliseum, has voiced strong opposition to the project. The university’s administration has raised concerns about the potential impact of the casino on the local community, including issues related to traffic congestion, crime, and the overall character of the area.
They argue that a casino could bring negative social consequences that outweigh the economic benefits promised by Las Vegas Sands. Additionally, Hofstra has expressed worries about the potential impact on its students and the campus environment, advocating for development plans that are more in line with the educational and community values of the region.
Environmental impact study
The approval of the lease transfer and the commencement of the state environmental review represent significant milestones in the redevelopment process. The environmental review will assess the potential impacts of the proposed casino and resort on the local environment, including factors such as air quality, noise levels, traffic patterns, and ecological effects.
The Nassau Hub, centrally located in Nassau County, has long been seen as a prime location for revitalization efforts. The area’s strategic location and accessibility make it an attractive site for large-scale developments, although realizing those efforts has proven problematic over the years.
The outcome of the state gaming license decision will be particularly pivotal, determining whether Nassau County could become home to a major new casino. Regardless of the final decision, the transformation of the Nassau Coliseum and its surrounding area is poised to have a lasting impact on the region.
