Major international operator bet365 has initiated a soft launch in Pennsylvania, marking a significant expansion of its sports betting and iCasino operations within the U.S. This move comes 18 months after the company first secured market access in the state, reflecting a strategic approach to entering the competitive Pennsylvania betting landscape.
The soft launch, which began on Tuesday, is a critical phase of testing that will continue through Thursday. Full approval by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board could arrive as early as the end of this week if everything goes smoothly.
The entry of bet365, part of the newly formed Responsible Online Gaming Association, into Pennsylvania is part of a broader trend of growth for the company across the U.S., where it now holds a license in 10 states (11 with Pennsylvania). This list also includes Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia.
bet365 has potential
As a global company, bet365’s financial health is robust, with reported revenues of $4.3 billion and a pre-tax profit of £470 million for the fiscal year 2022-23. These figures are a testament to bet365’s enduring appeal and its ability to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of online gambling. The company’s success is also reflected in its international expansion, with websites launched across Europe, Australia, and North America.
The company’s approach to the Pennsylvania market has been methodical, with the company taking the necessary time to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and to tailor its offerings to the preferences of local bettors. The partnership with Presque Isle Downs & Casino, announced in January 2023, was a pivotal step in securing market access and has been instrumental in facilitating bet365’s soft launch.
The company has impressed with its performance in neighboring Ohio, where it has emerged as a top-three operator despite a crowded market. However, the higher tax rates in Pennsylvania, at 34% compared to Ohio’s 20%, present a unique challenge to profitability for bet365.
Bet365 generated $6.3 million in online casino revenue in New Jersey from January through May, averaging $1.3 million per month, placing it in 18th position out of 32 operators. The company entered the New Jersey market in 2019.
Pennsylvania to be a challenge
Pennsylvania’s online gambling and betting markets have witnessed remarkable revenue success, with the state setting new records regularly. In May, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported total revenue of over $520 million, an 8.68% increase compared to the previous year.
March 2024 saw the Keystone State reach an all-time monthly high, with revenue soaring to $554,625,294, eclipsing the previous record set in December 2023. Such figures are not just numbers; they represent the thriving pulse of an industry that has been meticulously cultivated through strategic initiatives and forward-thinking policies.
The state’s online gambling market has become increasingly crowded, with several operators vying for a share of the lucrative industry. Notable among these are DraftKings, BetMGM, and FanDuel, which, along with bet365 now, form a competitive landscape that offers a diverse range of betting options to Pennsylvania residents.
FanDuel is the undisputed leader in Pennsylvania’s online gambling market, maintaining the top spot in monthly sports betting handle since its launch in July 2019. With a staggering $11.5 billion in total handle and $1.1 billion in revenue, FanDuel significantly outperforms its closest competitor, DraftKings, which has generated $7.3 billion in handle and $516 million in revenue.
